For our customers, it’s business as usual.
What Happened? A Major Security Warning for Websites Worldwide
On 21 October 2026, the developers of PHP, one of the world’s most widely used website programming languages, released emergency security updates following the discovery of two critical vulnerabilities.
The seriousness of the issue prompted warnings from cybersecurity authorities, including the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which urged organisations to update affected systems immediately.
The threat was considered so significant that some organisations temporarily took their websites offline while the necessary security measures were implemented.
The vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, were both given a critical severity score of 9.2 out of 10.
For website owners, the potential consequences of leaving affected systems unpatched could be severe.
What Is PHP and Why Does This Matter?
PHP is a programming language that works behind the scenes on millions of websites around the world.
It powers many popular website platforms, including WordPress and WooCommerce, helping websites display content, process forms, manage customer accounts and operate online shops.
Although most website owners will never need to interact directly with PHP, it is an essential part of how their websites operate.
The vulnerabilities discovered this week affect PHP itself, rather than simply being an issue with a particular WordPress plugin, theme or website.
This means that even a website with an up-to-date version of WordPress could potentially have been at risk if its underlying PHP installation had not received the necessary security update.
How Serious Was the Security Threat?
The two vulnerabilities could potentially allow cybercriminals to execute malicious code remotely on an affected web server.
In simple terms, an attacker could exploit weaknesses in the underlying software to gain unauthorised access to systems without first needing to log in.
Depending on the server configuration and the access available, a successful attack could potentially lead to:
- Unauthorised access to website files and sensitive information.
- Websites being altered, damaged or taken offline.
- Malicious software being installed on affected systems.
- Customer information or other stored data being compromised.
- Further attacks against connected systems.
These were not minor software bugs. They were serious security weaknesses requiring immediate attention.
The PHP development team released corrected versions of the software on 21 October and strongly recommended that website operators install the updates without delay.
What Has Chatsworth Web Solutions Done?
As soon as the seriousness of the vulnerability became clear, we reviewed the PHP installations on our managed hosting infrastructure and took action.
Following the release of the official security fixes, we updated our servers to the recommended secure PHP versions.
The necessary security updates were implemented within hours, without our customers having to request assistance or arrange the work themselves.
This is an important part of the service we provide.
Website security isn’t simply about installing WordPress updates occasionally. It also means keeping an eye on the underlying technology, identifying potential threats and responding quickly when something needs attention.
Our customers are busy running their businesses. They shouldn’t have to spend their evenings researching PHP security announcements or working out how to update server software.
That’s our job.
Why Proactive Website Hosting and Maintenance Matters
Today’s announcement is a useful reminder that website security extends well beyond the website itself.
A website might look perfectly healthy, load quickly and appear to be functioning normally, while the software running behind the scenes requires an urgent security update.
This is one of the reasons we believe professional website hosting and ongoing maintenance are so important.
At Chatsworth Web Solutions, we don’t simply provide somewhere for your website to live. Our managed hosting service is designed to provide ongoing care, technical support and attention to the software that keeps your website running.
When serious security issues arise, having somebody who understands your website and its hosting environment can make an enormous difference.
Today’s PHP security alert is a practical example of that approach in action.
Do Our Customers Need to Do Anything?
For customers whose websites are hosted on our updated managed servers, no further action is required to address these two PHP vulnerabilities.
We have already applied the relevant security updates.
As always, we recommend maintaining strong passwords, keeping website applications and plugins updated, and ensuring that appropriate backups are in place.
Website security is an ongoing process, and no hosting provider can guarantee that a website will never encounter a security issue. However, prompt updates and proactive management are among the most important steps in reducing the risks.
Your Website Is Our Responsibility
At Chatsworth Web Solutions, we’ve been designing, hosting and looking after business websites for many years.
We know how important those websites are to the businesses that rely on them for enquiries, sales and communication with customers.
Today’s security alert demonstrates why we take website hosting and maintenance seriously.
While website owners around the world were being warned to take urgent action, we were already implementing the necessary security updates for our managed hosting customers.
It’s all part of looking after the businesses that trust us with their websites.
If you’re concerned about the security of your existing website, or you’re unsure whether your current hosting provider has applied the latest PHP security updates, please get in touch.
We’re always happy to help.
